Microsoft Windows NT, Beta October 1992 "Please Insert Disk #6" error in text Setup on floppy installation The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified a floppy disk setup problem with the October Beta release of Windows NT. On certain systems, an error may occur during installation. When the message "Please Insert Disk #6" appears, and Disk #6 is inserted and the error continues to recur, the installation of Windows NT is prevented. If you attempt floppy disk installation, you may experience this problem. The behavior occurs due to a problem identified in the floppy driver provided in the Beta release and FLOPPY.SYS was not attempting to retry the operation in the presence of this error. If the error occurs, you will be unable to complete installation from floppy disk which may leave your system in an inconsistent state. Quit the Setup program and boot from an MS-DOS floppy boot disk. The system may require that you run the MS-DOS SYS utility on the hard drive to recover your environment. Follow the instructions below before attempting to reinstall Windows NT again from floppy disk. If you encounter this problem, please take the following steps to replace the driver as instructed. We appreciate our customers efforts in reporting problem areas and encourage you to continue working with us to improve the product. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. ___________________________________________________________________________ If you utilize a system with only one 3.5" floppy disk drive, take the following steps unless you have a double floppy drive system. 1. Insert the floppy disk into the floppy disk drive containing the updated version of FLOPPY.SY$. 2. Using the File Manager or copy command, copy FLOPPY.SY$ located on the patch diskette to a location on your hard disk. For example, File, Copy, To: C:\. 3. Remove the patch diskette and insert Disk #6 of the Windows NT floppy disk install set into the disk drive. 4. Using the File Manager, locate FLOPPY.SY$ on the hard drive and copy directly to the root of Disk #6 replacing the failing driver. For example, File, Copy, To: A: 5. You may now attempt to reinstall Windows NT from floppy disk.
